Insomnia Medications to ask Doctor for? What is wrong with me?
I have finally broken down and called the doctor. I cant sleep at night- I have tried everything OTC- Unisom, Sleep Aid…Tyelonol PM even…
For some reason- I get paranoid at night. Any noise I hear I am sure its someone breaking in. My husband is a big marine, so there really is nothing to be afraid of with him. I cant sleep, then finally I go into this semi sleep mode and have bad dreams, that I think are real in my semi sleep state and then my heart is pounding and I wake myself up and am pissed that I woke up…GRR….its so frustrating.
What should I ask my dr for? Do you think this is anxiety? a mind thing? or what?? I have NO trama in my life, nothing bad has happened to me that you would think would cause this.
Thank you so much for your advice- and please let me know if this has happened to you.
Also- I dont eat usually 3 hours before, or drink caffine.

I have had trouble sleeping my entire life. Usually I would take some benedryl or similar allergy med to get to sleep. If you look at the ingredients, it is the same as sleeping pills (same main ingredient). I too recently consulted my doctor on this problem. He prescribed me a generic version of ambien. It works wonders. About 90 % of the time that I take it, I fall asleep within a half hour. I only take it about once a week. Then I use benedryl on the other days, when i need to get up in the morning. I have had more luck with allergy meds over sleeping pills.
I know how you feel – it’s AWFUL to suffer from insomnia like this. I have had bouts with it off & on. I have a 20 year old daughter who suffers with NOT SLEEPING and has also tried everything and NOTHING HELPS – even from the doctors prescriptions. I think it IS an anxiety issue personally. Worry, not being able to turn your brain off, thinking & rethinking, loneliness, depression, fear, can turn into paranoia etc… I think it starts developing into even MORE emotional issues that stem from insufficient rest and sleep. YOUR brain gets on over load and this is why some people have break downs from NOT SLEEPING.
Since when we sleep our body AND Brains recharge, rest and that rest does something chemically to our brains that calms us and helps us cope, be at peace, think more clearly, etc, etc… it’s a vicious circle. HONESTLY I think a sleep study is in order for you (and my daughter but our insurance doesn’t cover it or her!) – does yours? This sort of thing CAN become not just tiresome and frustrating but can lead to some real and serious emotional and mental concerns and issues…. don’t give up. Try another doctor, get another opinion, get a referral to a sleep clinic – LIFE IS HARD enough with your husband gone – you NEED to rest and sleep. DO something smart & safe & sane while you still CAN before you do something or feel something desperate.
